New winemaker,
new chef and new momentum

IT'S A CASE of onwards and upwards at Bimbadgen Estate, the Hunter Valley producer that has been regularly voted the best tourism winery in New South Wales. With a new chief winemaker in talented Sarah Crowe, a new head chef at Esca restaurant in Ebonnie Newby and a renewed five-star rating in James Halliday's 2011 Wine Companion, there is a new mood of excitement at Bimbadgen.

Sarah recently joined after stints at Brokenwood, where she learnt from two of the best winemakers in the Hunter - Iain Riggs and PJ Charteris - and at Swish Wines. She grew up in Wollongong, studied horticulture after leaving school and in 2001 started a short-term job at Brokenwood, where she fell in love with the wine industry and decided to study for a bachelor of applied science degree in viticulture at Charles Sturt University.

Sarah went back to Brokenwood for a short stint in 2002 and became assistant winemaker in 2004 while doing vintages in Oregon in 2004 and 2006 and, more recently, the Rhone Valley in 2008. She is also a regular show judge. In May 2009, Sarah received the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association's Hunter Legends Rising Star of the Year award and then joined newcomer Swish Wines as chief winemaker. She joined Bimbadgen in September this year after underlining her talent by being accepted for both the Future Leaders of the Wine Industry program 2010 and the 2010 Len Evans Tutorial program.
